Watching this older straight white Republican man choking back tears and wrestling to admit and then cope with the realization that gay people like me (and, apparently, his daughter, and several close members of his staff) really truly are loving human beings as much as he is didn't fill me with contempt that he is arriving so late at the obvious but with admiration and compassion and, even, joy.
The Nixonian Republican party of resentment, the Reagan Republican party of "friendly fascism," the Rovian Republican party of dirty tricks, the Christianist Right Republican party of theocracy, hate, and anti-science superstition is literally dying before our eyes as a dominant force in American public life.
