A Bridge Too Far in the GOP Civilization Dismantlement Project

ThinkProgress:
Republican Congressional leadership [opposes] infrastructure investments even as structural deficiencies in bridges and roadways persist in their home states. Among those is Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, where 34 percent of bridges are considered structurally deficient or functionally obsolete. The Sherman Minton Bridge, one of three major bridges spanning the Ohio River between Louisville, KY and southern Indiana, was among the Kentucky bridges listed as deficient. And last night, the Sherman Minton Bridge was closed after further deficiencies, including cracks, were found in a load-bearing part of its structure.
I was flabbergasted to hear this news. Growing up in Floyds Knobs, Indiana, the Sherman-Minton Bridge connected us to Louisville, Kentucky. It is a beautiful structure, certainly the most beautiful of the three bridges spanning the Ohio for Kentuckiana, and was one of my favorite places growing up (along with the fossil beds near the Falls of the Ohio and Louisville's Belvedere). My father worked in the city and crossed that bridge every day there and back again. This isn't a story about a rickety covered bridge over a crick closed down for creaking. It's quite a big deal.
