I find it striking just how insulting to Oklahomans' intelligence Gingrich is being here, but also how transparent he is in his unconcealed gratitude at that stupidity he is assuming about them, his unabashed admission of how the GOP at this point really relies on such stupidity for whatever purchase it might have on national affairs.
Also, you can put a gun rack on anything (including a bicycle).
Here Newt displays a considerable ignorance of both firearms, cars, and the ingenuity of the average hillbilly.
Gun Racks for Tricycles!
There was a recent article on Queerty (which I got to from your
blog roll) about a Mitt Romney campaign big-wig in Arizona
(one Sheriff Paul Babeu -- who looks kind of like Victor Fehrenbach,
but chubbier) having to resign after being outed as a
result of a spat with his ex-boyfriend (so what else is new?)
There were some interesting remarks in the comment thread --

Simply put, Republican politicians are, for lack of a better word,
afraid of gays for fear they’ll lose their support from organized religion.
This is no secret. We gay Republicans are simply more concerned
with the country than we are with our own personal agenda. It’s
not a difficult equation, but for some reason the LGBT community
sees us as traitors, self-haters, Uncle Toms, etc, which is as
absurd as ridiculing a straight white man for being a Democrat.
Are Democrats more open to gays and gay issues? Inarguably, yes,
they are. However, I don’t view the country in terms of gay
and straight—I look at right and wrong.

I used to be a hard-core Republican (pre-Bush years;) but their
stance on gay rights is completely deplorable. I agree with a
number of fiscal and foreign policy stances by the Republican party;
but I’m not about to support them with a “that’s close enough for me”
attitude. Politicians need to understand and respect that they
are tasked with representing a variety of people; gay, straight,
christian, atheist, etc. I don’t trust any politician that panders
to a particular subset, period. . . Republicans seem to be going with
“what’s the craziest thing I can say today?” when it comes to EVERYTHING;
gay rights, the economy, immigration, etc.

So -- reason to vote Republican, even if you're gay: because you're
more concerned with the country than with your own personal
agenda.

You realize how much is packaged in this quip.
The real message (to the **men** of Oklahoma) is that Volts
(and other electric and/or small [wimpy] cars and similar
prissy environmental sacrifices) are
for omega males -- wimps and losers. For people who live
their lives in fear of those arrogant egghead scientists
(who got lots of wedgies in gym class and who are themselves trying
to get theirs back by intimidating the jocks through their
fearmongering). For people who are too stupid to see what's
**really** going on with these "revenge of the nerds"
intimidation tactics.
And **all** "liberal" males, remember, are just wussses who
are trying to get a measure of self-respect by "cheating"
and subverting the natural male hierarchy (in alliance, of
course, with those awful feminists and fags).
Whereas Newt, and the real men of Oklahoma, are alpha males
who live their lives with gusto and continue to administer
wedgies to their inferiors. And put gun racks in SUVs.
It's a whole world view in a single sentence. George Lakoff
could write a book about it. ;->

He won the South Carolina primary by blaming the countries woes on lazy black people on a daily basis. He's a dab hand with the dog whistle.
However I can say one good thing about Newt, he doesn't believe a lot of what he says.

Not to be confused with Mitt Romney, who sometimes says things he's not
supposed to believe:
